The Powerstroke engine was first introduced for the 1994 model year and displaced 7.3 Liters. One of the unique features of the 7.3L Powerstroke was it's HEUI fuel injection system in which the force for operating the fuel injectors was produced by a second high pressure engine-driven oil pump. The 7.3L engine continued though the 2003 model year when it was replaced by the 6.0L Powerstroke. The 6.0L Powerstroke also used a HEUI fuel injection system but added a new VGT (variable geometry) turbocharger design that allowed the engine to be significantly more responsive. The 2008 model year brought the introduction of the 6.4L Powerstroke and did away with HEUI injection in favor of a common rail injection system. 6.4L engines were equipped with dual turbochargers. The 6.4L engine saw a short production run and was replaced with the 6.7L engine for 2011 models. The 6.7L was the first Powerstroke engine not developed in house by Ford Motor Co.
